ToggleGalvanized steel is made by coating regular steel with a layer of zinc. This is typically done through hot-dip galvanizing, submerging the steel into a molten zinc solution. The zinc adheres to the steel surface, creating a protective layer that helps prevent rust and corrosion. The zinc acts as a sacrificial cathode, protecting the steel from corrosive elements. The chemical reactions that would destroy the steel make the zinc stronger. However, neither pure nor weathered zinc is magnetic.

Iron is known for its magnetic properties. The Earth’s core is molten iron, so a compass can accurately point toward the magnetic north. Steel, derived from iron, also possesses magnetic properties. Magnets are associated with electricity and are used in hydropower generation and lightning rods to draw lightning strikes.
Galvanized steel is not magnetic, so the magnet will not be attracted to the galvanized layer. However, suppose the steel beneath the galvanized layer is magnetic, and the zinc layer needs to be thick enough to isolate the magnetic force completely. In that case, the magnet may indirectly stick to the galvanized steel. Other surface treatments, like applying a black protective film, can further improve the performance and appearance of galvanized steel without affecting its magnetic properties.
Whether the magnet will stick to the galvanized steel depends on whether the steel underneath is magnetic and whether the zinc layer is thick enough to prevent direct contact with the magnetic substrate. The magnet can indirectly stick to the galvanized steel through the magnetic substrate if the conditions are met. Conversely, the magnet will not stick to the galvanized steel if the galvanized layer is thick enough or the substrate is not magnetic.
