What is electroplating?

Electroplating is a process in which a metal layer is applied onto an object using electrodeposition. This is achieved by using controlled electrolysis to transfer the metal coating from an anode to a cathode.
Electroplating is a widely used metal finishing process in various industries and applications.
We can offer various electroplating services and finishes, including zinc nickel plating on stainless steel. The process of electroplating is primarily utilized to alter the physical characteristics of an item. Metal plating offers improved wear resistance, corrosion protection, aesthetic appeal, and increased thickness.

How Does the Electroplating Work?

The process of electroplating is based on an electrolytic cell principle. You immerse two metal rods in an electrolyte, and they act as electrodes that connect to opposite power supply terminals, creating a potential difference. An electric current runs through, causing the electrolyte to break down into metal ions. These ions transfer to the negative electrode, also known as the cathode, where they become positively charged. As this happens, the concentration of ions in the electrolyte decreases. However, selecting the appropriate element for the anode allows us to replenish the concentration of positive ions in the electrolyte.

For example, if we want to coat brass with copper, the brass becomes the substrate. When connected to the negative terminal, it becomes the cathode. We use a copper sulfate solution as the electrolyte, which disintegrates into positive copper ions. Conversely, we use a copper anode to replenish the electrolyte’s positive ions.

We can control various factors by adjusting the process parameters, such as the plate thickness, rate of metal deposition, surface finish, and color. For example, using pure copper plates will give a better appearance than regular copper rods in the market. This process enables us to coat the material with one or more metals.

Electroplating Material Options

Manufacturers layer metals such as copper, nickel, cadmium, chromium, brass, gold, iron, silver, zinc, and titanium during electroplating for improved strength and conductivity.

Non-conductive materials like plastic, wood, and glass can be made conductive by applying a layer of conductive paint or spray onto the substrate.

Types of Electroplating

The setup for the electroplating process has adapted to various applications. Selecting a method that aligns with the specific application can significantly enhance operational efficiency. It’s crucial to comprehend the different types available. Generally, electroplating techniques fall into four main categories:

1. Continuous Plating

2. Rack Plating

3. Mass Plating

4. In-line Plating.

The Benefits of Electroplating

 1. Protective

Electroplating with less reactive metal improves tarnishing, corrosion, heat, and impact resistance.

2. long-lasting

Galvanized angle steel has a smooth appearance, a balanced zinc layer, no leaks or drips, strong adhesion, and corrosion resistance.

3. Strong toughness

The galvanized layer is a unique metal structure that can endure mechanical damage during transportation.

4. Time-saving

The galvanizing process can be initiated faster than other coating methods.

5. Excellent appearance.

It makes objects appear shiny.
