What is CNC Milling?

CNC milling is the computer-controlled cutting of wood, metal, or plastic. The controls determine tool sequence, cutter path, spindle RPM, and feed rate. Multiple CNC milling machines are available, with varying complexity levels. They range from three to more than five axes of motion control, suitable for making complex parts.

How Does CNC Milling Work?

CNC milling uses rotating cutting tools to create parts from material blocks in a single cycle. The tool paths, cut depth, and the CNC control program predetermines spindle RPM. During milling, the tool’s cutting edge removes material from the stationary workpiece. The CNC control program determines the exact tool paths and travel.

CNC Milling Process steps

The CNC milling process has the following steps:

1. Creating a 3D CAD model for the part

2. Converting the CAD model to a CNC program using CAM software.

3. Installing the CNC milling machine and setting up the tools, spindles, vices, and fixtures.

4. Executing the program, during which the CNC milling machine follows the program line by line to complete all the machining operations on the workpiece.

Different techniques used in CNC milling

CNC Milling has several forms for part fabrication, including plain, face, angular, form, and gang milling.

CNC milling equipment

For CNC milling, the equipment is as below:

– Spindle: Holds and directs the cutting tool.

– Worktable: Holds the workpiece.

– Saddle: Provides support and guides movement.

– Knee: Provides vertical support.

– Arbor: Shaft to which tools are fixed.

– Ram: Optional support for the spindle.

 -Interface: Operator-computer communication point.

– Machine Tools: Cutting tools, such as end mills.

Advantages of CNC milling

CNC milling offers high precision and efficiency due to computer-controlled operations. It leads to consistent quality and reduced labor costs.

Limitations of CNC Milling

CNC milling is costly and has limitations in the size and geometry of the parts it can produce. Undercuts or recessed features require specialized tools or expensive multi-axis machines. Human error can also result in bad parts and scrap.
