What is CNC Grinding?

CNC grinding is a process that involves using a high-speed abrasive wheel to remove tiny amounts of material as the cutting tool. The wheel rotates in place while the part or workpiece attached to the machine table moves in the X, Y, and Z-axis.

Advantages and Disadvantages of CNC Grinding

CNC grinding machines offer several benefits over traditional Grinding. They provide fine finishes and lighter cuts on your workpiece, reduce waste, and eliminate the possibility of producing products that do not meet the requirements. These machines can run continuously, allowing large quantity production, and produce identical products in bulk. Updating the CNC software can improve performance and save time and cost.

The disadvantage is that the tool is expensive and requires high precision, making the process costly.

Types of Grinding

Surface grinding uses a grinding machine with a circular/square table and a straight/cup wheel. The workpiece is mounted on a reciprocating/rotary table and brought into close contact with the grinding wheel. There are four types of surface grinders.

Centerless Grinding

Centerless Grinding eliminates the need for center holes for the workpiece. The workpiece is placed on a work-rest blade and backed up by a regulating wheel. The rubber-bonded abrasive’s regulating wheel rotates in the same direction as the grinding wheel to control the workpiece feed rate.

Cylindrical Grinding

Cylindrical Grinding involves grinding the outer surface of a cylinder using a grinding wheel rotating at a faster rate in the opposite direction. The table and the workpiece reciprocate while in contact with the grinding wheel to remove material.

Internal Grinding

Internal Grinding is used to finish tapered, straight, or formed holes accurately. The workpiece is revolved with a motorized headstock, and a separate motor rotates the grinding wheel.

Special Grinding

Special Grinding involves specific types of operations and works that require special grinders—for example, Tool and Cutter Grinders, Thread Grinding Machines, and Jig Grinding Machines.

How does a grinding machine work?

An operator or programmer inputs commands into the CNC machine’s computer to grind a workpiece. The machine then moves the grinding head onto the workpiece to remove material. Various grinding machines have different techniques for removing material, including slow movements or high-speed spinning.

Tips for Effective Grinding

Here are some tips to help you make effective use of grinding operations:

  1. Follow the grinder’s advice
  2. Choose the right tool
  3. Maintain the coolant system
  4. Keep collets in good condition
  5. Dress grinding wheels regularly
  6. Ensure electrical and air supply
